Ethereum Funding Cost Calculator on Bybit

funding is the rent on a perp position: every 8 hours the longs and shorts settle the difference between perp price and spot. type your size and the current rate, see what holding costs per day, week, month — and what it pays if you flip the side.

the meter on your position

perpetuals have no expiry, so exchanges use funding to tether the perp to spot: funding > 0 means longs pay shorts, funding < 0 means shorts pay longs. cost = size × rate × intervals held, with a new interval every 8 hours on Bybit. three intervals a day, ~90 a month.

funding is charged on notional, not margin. a 25x position paying 0.03% per 8h pays 0.09% of notional a day — which is 2.25% of margin a day. the leverage that made the position feel cheap also multiplies the rent.

worked example: $12,000 ETH long at 0.01% funding per 8h

per 8h interval
$1.8
per day (3 intervals)
$5.4
per week
$37.8
per 30 days
$162.00
same size short, same week
+$37.8 paid to you

$12,000 long, funding at 0.01% per 8h — a normal, boring print. $1.8 every 8 hours, $5.4 a day, $37.8 a week, $162.00 over a month. nobody opens a ETH long planning to pay $162.00 in rent, but that's what hodling a perp costs.

flip the side and the same numbers land in your account: short ETH into a crowded long market at 0.01% and the longs pay you $37.8 a week to sit there. funding is a transfer, not a fee — the question is only which side of it you're on.

eth funding runs hotter than btc's in risk-on weeks: 0.03–0.08% per 8h is normal, and during a proper melt-up it will pin at the exchange's cap while every retail account is max long.

Bybit prints funding every 8h. bybit perp taker fees run 0.055% a side, a hair above binance. nobody chooses a venue over 5 thousandths of a percent, but at 50x it compounds into the same conversation as funding.

when funding is the trade

extreme funding is a sentiment reading, not a fee. persistent 0.10%+ prints mean the crowd is one-sided and paying a premium to stay there; the side collecting is being paid to absorb it. eth funding runs hotter than btc's in risk-on weeks: 0.03–0.08% per 8h is normal, and during a proper melt-up it will pin at the exchange's cap while every retail account is max long.

the counterparty caveat: getting paid 0.10% per 8h to short a coin in a vertical move is how accounts end up on the liquidation tape. collect funding with a stop, not with hope.

the 8h clock

Bybit settles funding at fixed timestamps (00:00, 08:00, 16:00 utc for usdt-m). entering a position two minutes before a settlement pays a full interval — the countdown is worth checking before you market-buy a crowded long.

funding is predictable at settlement; price isn't. the cost side of this calculator is the honest number to put next to your target before you enter, not after.

funding plus liq: the two numbers that matter

funding bleeds you slowly, liquidation takes everything at once. a ETH position has both numbers attached at all times — use the funding calculator here for the bleed, the Ethereum liquidation calculator for the cliff, and the alert gate below to get screamed at before either one arrives.

faq

how is funding cost calculated?

cost = size × funding rate × intervals held. a usdt-m perp settles every 8 hours, so a day is 3 intervals. funding applies to notional, not margin — 0.01% on a $20,000 position is $2 per settlement, $6 a day, regardless of leverage.

who pays funding on a perpetual future?

funding > 0: longs pay shorts. funding < 0: shorts pay longs. it's a transfer between the two sides that keeps the perp anchored to spot — not a fee to the exchange, though the exchange's mark decides the rate.

what is a typical funding rate?

0.01% per 8h is the baseline most usdt-m perps are quoted against (0.03% a day). calm markets hover there; crowded directional markets push it to 0.05–0.10%+; panics flip it negative. when funding is extreme, the fee is telling you who's trapped.

how often is funding paid on binance and bybit?

both settle usdt-m perps every 8 hours, at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 utc. some contracts (notably during extreme volatility) can switch to hourly funding — if the rate looks 8x smaller but the countdown says 1h, that's why.

what's the difference between predicted and realized funding?

predicted is the rate you'd get if the current premium held until settlement; realized is what actually printed. use predicted to decide whether to hold through the next 8h clock, use this calculator to price what it costs if you're wrong.

is funding included in my liquidation price?

indirectly, yes — every funding settlement debits or credits your position margin, so persistent funding shifts your real liq price slightly. the estimate on this site doesn't model the accrual; estimate — exchanges compute exact liq from live margin.
