a $100,000 BTC long at 20x on bybit hits its margin call at $80,127; doubling the $5,000 posted moves it to $75,925.

how it's computed

on usdt-m perps there's no earlier warning — the call and the liquidation are the same price, entry × (1 − 1/leverage + mmr), and the bracket sets the mmr: 0.33% to 5.00% across these coins.

the short version

on perps the margin call is the liquidation — one price. see it, and get a ping before price gets there.

what a margin call is on a perp

on a perp the margin call is the liquidation: one price, no deadline, and nobody calls you first.

a stock margin call is a warning with a deadline: deposit by friday or we sell. a perp never asks — when equity drops under maintenance margin the engine force-closes into the book, at entry × (1 − 1/leverage + mmr) for a long. a separate 'margin call price' for perps is the liquidation price sold twice.

the bracket is the one term you don't choose, and it follows notional: 0.33% to 5.00% maintenance across the coins here. same 20x long, different venue, different call — the table below prices it.

isolated or cross — where your call actually sits

isolated: the call price is fixed when you open. cross: it floats with your whole wallet.

on isolated margin the position's own margin is the whole buffer, so entry, leverage and bracket fix the call — every number on these pages is that case.

on cross the wallet backs the position, so the line moves with your balance, your other positions and any deposit, and no public page can compute it. read the isolated number as the closest the engine could reach you — the floor under your room, not the room.

and a cross call walks through the wallet, including the positions you were right about. keep more room than the isolated number asks for.

adding margin is the lever that moves the call

$100,000 BNB long at 20x, margin doubled: 5.00% of room on hyperliquid, 9.40% on binance — up from 0.00% and 4.40%.

brackets read from www.binance.com and api.bybit.com and www.okx.com and api.hyperliquid.xyz, verified 2026-09-23; the first five per symbol are stored, so a position past the last one pays more than the table shows. the 'double margin' column models posting the same collateral again — venues revise brackets without notice, and the leaf calculators re-read the same table at your size.

before the call you can close, add margin, or hold on purpose, and only adding margin moves the line. doubling the margin halves effective leverage and doubles the 1/leverage half of the room: at 20x that adds 5.00% of notional. the table prices it per venue.

the venue is free room you pick before the trade: at $100,000 the widest split is BNB, 0.60% on binance against 5.00% on hyperliquid — 4.40% of entry, $4,400 on this size, and it scales with the position.

adding margin postpones, it doesn't prevent: a cascade that reaches the old call often reaches the new one, and you've paid more to stand in it. decide before the warning, not during it.

the three options when the warning fires

close at a real price, add margin (doubling the $5,000 posted moves the call from $80,127 to $75,925), or hold on purpose.

  • closeexit at a real price while the book is still there.
  • add margindoubling the $5,000 posted moves the call from $80,127 to $75,925.
  • hold on purposeaccept the wick as part of the plan, with the size built for it.

close: before the call you exit at a real price; at the call you fill into the wick, plus the venue's liquidation fee. the closer to the line, the worse the exit.

add margin: on the BTC example, doubling the $5,000 posted moves the call from $80,127 to $75,925 — and puts twice as much in front of the wick if it gets there anyway. make it a decision with a number attached, not a deposit into a loss you can't accept.

hold, knowingly: fine when the wick is part of the plan and the size was built for it. what isn't a plan is finding out at the fill — the alert below reaches you while all three are still open. free tier, no signup.

faq

isn't a margin call different from a liquidation?

on stock margin accounts, yes: the broker warns you and gives you time to deposit. on crypto perps, no — the engine force-closes the position the moment equity hits maintenance margin. there is no grace period and no deposit deadline, so the warning and the liquidation are the same price, and this page computes that one instead of inventing a second.

how do i get warned before my margin call price?

arm the alert below the calculator: pick the distance (e.g. scream at me when 20% of my room is left) and a channel — telegram, web push, or email. the free tier is 2 active alerts, no card. the venue itself won't warn you in time; its 'notification' is the forced close.

how much margin do i need to add to move the call?

posting the same margin again roughly doubles the room between the mark and the call — at 20x that's 5.00% of notional added to the distance. quadrupling the margin adds three times that. the arithmetic is in the table above; whether the trade deserves the extra collateral is your call.

why didn't my exchange warn me before liquidating?

because perp venues don't run a warning desk. the risk engine liquidates automatically when the mark crosses your maintenance level — the moment a warning would fire is the moment it sells. some venues email or push afterwards, which is a post-mortem. the only warning that arrives first is one you arm yourself.

does a margin call take my whole account?

on isolated margin, no — you lose the position's collateral and the position. on cross margin, potentially: the wallet backs the position, so a forced close walks through your balance, including profits from other positions. the isolated number on these pages is the fixed call price; a cross account only has the floating bound your balance sets.

does adding margin prevent liquidation?

no — it postpones. more collateral pushes the liquidation price away, but a move big enough to reach the old line is often big enough to reach the new one, and you've put more money in front of the same wick. what prevents liquidation is size and leverage chosen before you enter.
