position size & liq alert — every coin, every venue

risking $50 with a 2% stop sizes a $2,500 position — on any coin, on any venue, at any leverage.

how it's computed

the stop sets the size: contracts = risk ÷ |entry − stop|. leverage only decides how much margin that ties up, and the venue's bracket caps leverage by size.

the short version

enter what you're willing to lose and where your stop is. get the position size, plus a ping before liquidation.

markets

the division that sets everything else

position size = risk ÷ distance to your stop. leverage only decides how much margin that ties up.

contracts = risk ÷ |entry − stop|: the dollars you'll lose and the price where the idea is wrong. everything else follows — notional is size × entry, margin is notional ÷ leverage, and the bracket turns that margin into a liq price.

sizing the other way round — pick leverage, find out the loss afterwards — sizes for a feeling. $50 of risk is $50 at 2x and at 50x: leverage changes the margin and the liq distance, not the size or the loss — until the liq lands inside the stop and the exchange closes you first.

the division can't tell you whether the stop is in the right place. inside the coin's normal range it's a fee paid to whoever runs the wick; outside it, it's a thesis.

choosing the coin is choosing the stop

a coin that swings wider needs a wider stop, so the same risk buys a smaller position.

the stop that survives belongs to the coin, not to your conviction. a 2% stop on the largest perp and a 5% stop on a mid-cap are the same trade: at $50 of risk, a $2,500 position and a $1,000 one.

size everything at the same notional instead and your risk per trade is set by whichever coin swung hardest that week. the 24h liquidation column in the markets table above shows where stops are being swept.

leverage caps are per coin too: below the first step BTC allows 40x to 150x depending on the venue, smaller coins less, and the cap steps down as the position grows.

the bracket is a ceiling on size, not on leverage

at $100,000 of BNB, binance still allows 50x, hyperliquid only 10x. check the cap at your size.

brackets read from www.binance.com and api.bybit.com and www.okx.com and api.hyperliquid.xyz, verified 2026-09-23; first five brackets per symbol stored, so a position past the last one pays more than the table shows. the sizing division above is venue-independent — only these columns change.

a bracket table is a schedule of size: cross a notional threshold and the maintenance rate steps up while the leverage cap steps down — on the position you already hold, with no order from you. the table below shows where each venue's first step lands.

the split is widest on BNB: at $100,000, hyperliquid charges 5.00% and caps you at 10x, where binance charges 0.60% and allows 50x.

price crosses the step as much as you do: a position that doubles because you were right has doubled its notional, and the rate is re-read at what it's worth now. size with the next step in view.

what the size number leaves out

fees and slippage come out of your risk, and the liq should sit at least twice as far as the stop.

fees come out of the risk budget first. round-trip taker on every venue here is roughly a tenth of a percent of notional: about 5% of your risk on a 2% stop, a fifth of it on a 0.5% stop.

the stop guarantees an order, not a price. gaps, cascades and thin weekend books fill below the trigger, so a position sized to lose $50 loses $50 plus the slip. size as if the stop slips.

last check: the sized position's liq has to sit at least twice as far as the stop. if it doesn't, lower the leverage until it does, then arm the alarm on that number.

faq

i already have a position open — is this still useful?

run it backwards: enter your entry and the stop you'd actually honour, and compare the size it returns with what you're holding. bigger than the output means you're risking more per trade than you think — and the cheaper fix is usually the stop, since closing half at the wrong moment costs a fee and a spread.

does the venue change my position size?

no. size comes out of your risk budget and your stop distance, and neither is an exchange setting. the venue changes the margin that size ties up, the bracket it lands in, and the fee taken out of your risk budget. same trade, same size, different cost of carrying it.

the size comes out as a fraction — what do i do with it?

round down to the venue's contract step, never up — under budget is the error you want. if the minimum order is larger than what your budget bought, the stop is too tight for that coin at $50 of risk: widen it and take the smaller size.

does this work for cross margin?

the sizing half does, unchanged — risk ÷ stop distance doesn't care what backs the position. the liq half doesn't: on cross the liquidation price floats with your wallet and every other open position, so the number here is the isolated case, the earliest the engine could reach you.

how many alerts can i arm if i'm running several positions?

two at a time on the free tier, no card and no signup, and you can pause one to arm another when the book changes. unlimited alerts and night mode are $9/mo. the arithmetic on these pages stays free either way — what you'd be paying for is being woken up.

can i use this for spot, or for dated futures?

the division works anywhere: risk ÷ |entry − stop| sizes any instrument with a price and a stop. the second half doesn't carry over — spot has no maintenance bracket and no liquidation unless you borrowed, and dated futures run their own margin schedule that these 0.33%-and-up perp brackets don't describe.
