how this number is computed
exchanges liquidate in two stages: first your position drops below maintenance margin (mmr), then the insurance fund takes over. this calculator models the first stage for isolated margin: liq = entry × (1 − 1/leverage + mmr) for longs, entry × (1 + 1/leverage − mmr) for shorts. mmr comes from Binance's bracket table for BTC, picked by your position's notional.
cross margin reuses the same formula — cross just means your whole wallet is the margin buffer, so the real liq floats with your balance. treat every cross number as the isolated estimate and keep a fatter buffer; cross liq'd is account liq'd, not position liq'd.

what actually kills you

what's the difference between isolated and cross margin here?
isolated margin risks only the position's collateral; cross margin risks the whole wallet. the formula on this page is the isolated estimate. on cross, your real liq floats with your wallet balance — the more spare balance you hold, the further away liquidation sits, and the calculator can't see your wallet.
why did my liquidation price move after i opened the position?
mmr brackets are chosen by notional. if your position's value crossed a bracket boundary — because price moved or because you added size — the maintenance rate changed, and the liq price moved with it. check your bracket after any size change.
how close is too close to my liquidation price?
there's no safe number, only a number you can survive: a 2% buffer on btc is a normal afternoon; the same 2% on sol is noise. if a routine wick in the coin's normal range can reach your liq, the position is already too big — size it again with the position size calculator.
does the exchange liquidate at exactly this price?
