the short version

how to use this tool

funding is the rent on a perp position: on a fixed clock the longs and shorts settle the difference between perp price and spot. type your size and the current rate, see what holding costs per day, week, month — and what it pays if you flip the side.

the meter on your position

funding is rent: size × rate × intervals, settled every 8h on Binance. positive rate means longs pay.

funding tethers the perp to spot: above zero longs pay shorts, below zero shorts pay longs. Binance settles every 8 hours — 3 times a day.

it is charged on notional, not margin: at 25x, 0.03% of notional a day is 0.75% of your margin a day.

worked example: $1,000 ZEC long at 0.02% funding per 8h

$1,000 long at 0.02% per 8h: $0.60 a day, $18.00 a month.

$1,000 long, funding at 0.02% per 8h: $0.20 each interval, $0.60 a day, $4.20 a week, $18.00 over a month — the rent on holding a perp.

flip the side and the same money lands in your account: the short collects $4.20 a week. binance perp taker fees run 0.05% a side — 0.005% of notional above hyperliquid. on a position you open and close in a day that's 0.10% gone before funding — at 20x leverage that's 2% of your margin, which is more than most people's stop budget.

when funding is the trade

extreme funding means a one-sided crowd. the side collecting it still needs a stop.

zcash funding sat at the exchange baseline all week: 0.0090% per 8h on average, 0.0039% now, 0.0007% at its lowest. the rent is real but small; the print worth watching is the one that ends the boredom.

getting paid 0.10% per 8h to short a vertical move is how accounts end up on the liquidation tape — collect funding with a stop, not with hope.

the 8h clock

enter just before a settlement and you pay a full interval — check the countdown first.

Binance settles funding at fixed timestamps (00:00, 08:00, 16:00 utc for usdt-m). entering a position two minutes before a settlement pays a full interval — the countdown is worth checking before you market-buy a crowded long.

funding plus liq: the two numbers that matter

funding bleeds slowly; liquidation takes everything at once. watch both.

faq

how is funding cost calculated?

cost = size × funding rate × intervals held. a usdt-m perp settles on a fixed clock — every 8 hours on binance, bybit and okx, hourly on hyperliquid — so a day is 3 intervals there and 24 on hyperliquid. funding applies to notional, not margin — 0.01% on a $20,000 position is $2 per settlement, $6 a day, regardless of leverage.

who pays funding on a perpetual future?

funding > 0: longs pay shorts. funding < 0: shorts pay longs. it's a transfer between the two sides that keeps the perp anchored to spot — not a fee to the exchange, though the exchange's mark decides the rate.

what is a typical funding rate?

0.01% per 8h is the baseline most usdt-m perps are quoted against (0.03% a day — hyperliquid prints the same rent in hourly slices). calm markets hover there; crowded directional markets push it to 0.05–0.10%+; panics flip it negative. when funding is extreme, the fee is telling you who's trapped.

how often is funding paid on binance, bybit, okx and hyperliquid?

binance, bybit and okx settle usdt-m perps every 8 hours, at 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 utc; hyperliquid settles hourly, at the top of every hour. some contracts (notably during extreme volatility) can switch to hourly funding on the 8h venues too — if the rate looks 8x smaller but the countdown says 1h, that's why.

can i get paid funding?

yes — hold the side funding pays. in a crowded long market, shorts collect at every settlement — 8-hourly on binance, bybit and okx, hourly on hyperliquid. but you're shorting a rising market to do it, so collect with a stop: funding income is small, fast, and stops mattering entirely the moment price runs through your liq.

what's the difference between predicted and realized funding?

predicted is the rate you'd get if the current premium held until settlement; realized is what actually printed. use predicted to decide whether to hold through the next 8h clock, use the numbers here to price what it costs if you're wrong.

walk me through the ZEC example on this page

$1,000 ZEC long at 0.02% funding per 8h: per 8h interval $0.20; per day (3 intervals) $0.60; per week $4.20; per 30 days $18.00; same size short, same week +$4.20 paid to you. the full narrative is in the explainer above — and estimate — exchanges compute exact liq from live margin; always double-check on your venue.
